Belinda H. Spears-Hester endowed the scholarship to honor her late husband, Dan Spears, and his love of the giant California redwoods and the natural environment. Belinda is a retired public educator and was the 1997 recipient of the National Environmental Teaching Award and was active with Project Learning Tree. She has served as Director of the Wake County Energy Camp for the past 25 years, and also served as President of the North Carolina 4-H Board of Directors.
