College of Engineering (Stinson)
The Katherine Stinson Scholarship Endowment was established on February 22, 1984. Ms. Stinson was the first female graduate of the College of Engineering at NC State, graduating in 1941 with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. She was initially denied and told to come back when she achieved junior status. She attended Meredith for one year and received a total of 48 credit hours and was accepted at NC State. After graduation Ms. Stinson went on to work as an aeronautical engineer with the federal government, and retired in 1973 as a technical assistant chief of the engineering and manufacturing division of the Federal Aviation Administration. She developed the “Air Worthiness Directive” which set technical standard for all civil aircraft.
Impact
Katharine Stinson was the first female graduate of the College of Engineering at NC State.
