Dr. Daniel O. Adams
The William (Scotty) Grieg Scholarship Endowment was established in 1998 by Dr. Daniel O. Adams in honor of his father-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth G. Adams’s father.
William Greig, better known as Scotty, was born in Scotland in 1880. By the turn of the century he had saved enough money to come to the United States and began his work here at the Oxford Paper Company in Maine and when the workers went on strike, he went to work in Mechanicville, New York at the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company.
While in Mechanicville, Scotty went to night school to receive the education he had missed.
He returned briefly to Scotland to marry his childhood sweetheart, Christina Forsyth. They had three children.
In 1920, he was transferred to Covington, Virginia, where he worked until he retired, as the superintendent, in 1951, at age 68. He had worked 55 years in paper mills. When he retired, he was hired part time for a few years by one of the refiner manufacturers to train operators at new installations.
Mr. Greig served in his Presbyterian Church for many years, as a deacon, and soloist. He also often provided the program at service clubs and other organizations. He would come with kilt and tartan and crooked walking stick and sing the old Scottish songs. He passed away in 1954.
