Dr. Eugene J. Kamprath
Dr. Eugene J. Kamprath is a distinguished member of the NC State community. Dr. Kamprath is valued as an eminent scientist, trusted colleague, inspired teacher, insightful mentor, and visionary leader. Dr. Kamprath grew up in the farming community of Seward, Nebraska. He received a B.S. degree in Agronomy and a M.S. degree from the University of Nebraska and then earned his Ph.D. in Agronomy from North Carolina State University in 1955. After graduating, he joined the Department of Soil Science at NC State as an Assistant Professor. His entire professional career has been at NC State, being promoted to Associate Professor in 1958 and Professor in 1963. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy and the Soil Science Society of American. In 1981, he was named a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor. He served as Director of the Soil Testing Division within the NC Department of Agriculture and also served as Department Head of Soil Science from 1989 until his retirement in 1996. Under his tutelage, 17 M.S. and 26 Ph.D. students earned their degrees. Even, in retirement, he continues to participate in helping teach the undergraduate and graduate soil fertility courses while serving on departmental committees and advising graduate students. His life and work have reflected the highest standards of a scientist and a person who has always shown modesty, warmth, and concern for others.
