Dr. Wilma Peebles-Wilkins
The Myatt-Peebles Scholarship Endowment for Social Work was established by Dr. Wilma C. Peebles-Wilkins, NC State alumna, 1967. The scholarship was created to honor the memory of her parents, Millard and Mary Myatt Peebles and their descendants, and is given to undergraduate students pursuing their Bachelor of Social work degree, based on the college’s merit and need-based scholarship criteria. Mary Myatt Peebles grew up in historic Oberlin Village. Millard Peebles grew up in a black farming community in North Raleigh. He served in the Black Regiment in France during World War I prior to getting married and securing employment at “State College,” where gainful employment was obtained by many residents of Oberlin Village. Mr. Peebles was patriotic, religious and family-oriented. After marriage, Millard and Mary remained in Oberlin Village where they raised their children and instilled in them the value of an education. Dr. Wilma C. Peebles-Wilkins has had a successful career in academia, where she has served as Director of the Social Work Program, Associate Head of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work, and Associate Professor at NC State and as Professor and Dean at the Boston University School of Social Work.
