Family of Millard Nathan Carpenter, Jr.
The M. N. Carpenter, Jr. Scholarship Endowment was established in 2015 in memory Millard Nathan Carpenter, Jr. to assist students from northeastern North Carolina.
Millard Nathan “Junnie” Carpenter Jr. was born Feb 1, 1921. He grew up in Margarettsville, NC a small rural town in Northampton County and attended public school in Margarettsville and Seaboard. He graduated from NC State University in 1941 and served in World War II in the Army-Air Corp, flying 21 combat missions while stationed in Europe. After the war, he served as a rural mail carrier in the Margarettsville area for more than 37 years. He was an entrepreneur in multiple businesses serving the local farm community, including managing his father’s country store – Carpenter’s Store, operating and maintaining a cotton gin and peanut buying station, and purchasing a tractor-trailer to haul cotton bales and peanuts to market and fertilizer from Norfolk to sell to local farmers.
During those few waking hours of the week that he wasn’t working, he was active in the Seaboard Lions Club, the Seaboard Masonic Lodge, and Sharon United Methodist Church where he taught the Men’s Sunday School class for many years. He lived modestly and invested much of his income in farm and forest land in the local area. He took pride in being a good steward of the land and following the best practices in forest management. He loved the land and found great solace there.
