Fred Washington Butner, Jr, FAIA
Mr. Fred Washington Butner, Jr., grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. After graduating from R. J. Reynolds High School he attended North Carolina State University, entering the Architectural Engineering program and playing drums for the NC State Marching Band. Mr. Butner graduated in 1949 and returned to Winston-Salem with his sweetheart Martha Hinkle; they were married for more than fifty years until his death in 2001. He worked for Macklin Stinson before establishing his own architecture firm in 1952.
Mr. Butner was a prominent local architect. He designed more than one hundred school and college projects in Forsyth County and Northwest North Carolina, including multiple buildings at Forsyth Technical Community College, Surry Community College, West Forsyth High School, and many others. He also served as architect for numerous churches, governmental complexes, and commercial, office, bank and residential projects in the area, including the Forsyth County Hall of Justice, and branch offices for First Federal Savings and Loan, Piedmont Federal Savings and Loan. Service was a priority for Mr. Butner. Mr. Butner was active in civic and professional affairs on the local, state and national levels. He was honored by being named a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects in 1974, and served as president of both the N.C. American Institute of Architects and the N.C. Licensing Board for Architects. He also served as president of the Winston-Salem Lions Club, the Winston-Salem Engineers Club and the Forsyth Country Club, and was active in those organizations for many years.
