Harold Yale "Charb" Charbonnier
The Terry P. Charbonnier Endowed Scholarship was established in 1985 by husband Harold Yale (Charb) Charbonnier in memory of his wife Terry Parent Charbonnierr. He lovingly called her his “Blithe Spirit.” She died October 19, 1982.
Dr. Charbonnier died on October 15, 1987, at the age of 73. He earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at Syracuse University and his master’s and doctorate in pulp and paper technology at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. He was also a graduate of the advanced management program at the Harvard University School of Business.
Dr. Charbonnier was head of technical activities at Union Camp in Savannah, Ga. In 1952, he became mill manager and in 1964 he became general manufacturing manager of the unbleached division. This included responsibility for the mills in Georgia, Alabama, and Michigan. In 1968, he joined the Javelin Paper Company of Montreal, Canada, as executive vice-president and general manager. There, he supervised the design and construction of a 1,000 tpd linerboard mill in Newfoundland. Before his retirement, he joined Virginia Fibre Corporation as company officer and as director of corporate planning.
Over the years, he has served on the board of directors in a large number of organizations in technical, business, social, and civic fields. At the time of Dr. Charbonnier’s death, Mr. Joseph O. Bull, director of Planned Giving, said: " I came to know Charb as a friend during our brief 18-month acquaintance. He was a warm and gentle man. I will miss him very much. Everyone at the School of Forest Resources will miss him as well. He was a great friend of our University."
