In Memory of Durwood M. & Minnie Grady Price
D. McKinley Price was in the first Agricultural Institute class (1962), majoring in General Agriculture. He and wife Barbara created their gift to the Ag Institute in memory of his parents, Durwood M. and Minnie Grady Price. McKinley, born on July 6, 1941, was part of a large extended family, including Granddaddy Henry, Grandma Luecy, Grandpa Berry and Grandma Grace, who all cared for McKinley as a child.
In 1935, his father owned two general stores and McKinley remembers being a small child and being in those stores, where both parents worked. In 1966, they added a propane business and sold propane to Carolina Tobacco. Also at that time, they themselves had farming operations with tobacco, hogs, cattle and other livestock.
McKinley entered the charter class of the Ag Institute and came back to work with his father at a growing operation, which had expanded into fuel oil and agricultural chemicals. The farming operations had expanded and had land in a five county area, including Sampson, Lenoir, Duplin, Green and Wayne.
In 2011, they sold the fuel oil and propane business but kept the stores and continued to farm.
McKinley and Barbara cared for a large “blended” family themselves – between them seven children, and six grandchildren who all understood the large amount of caring and love in the Price household.
Shortly before his untimely death, McKinley and Barbara began to create the legacy at the school he loved. In fact, Barbara had just completed his “Wolfpack” den, filled with NCSU memorabilia and pictures of McKinley and the charter class of the Agricultural institute.
