IP for Lawrence H. Camp
The Lawrence H. Camp Scholarship was established in 1983 by Chesapeake Corporation, now a part of International Paper, in honor of the late L.H. Camp.
A member of the board of directors, Mr. Camp became the controller in 1961 after being associated with the corporation as an external auditor since 1944. He was elected treasurer in 1963 and vice president, treasurer, and a member of the board of directors in 1966. He became president and chief executive officer in 1969, retiring in 1980.
A native of Brunswick County, Mr. Camp attended Ferrum college, studied accounting in Richmond and then qualified as a certified public accountant. From 1936 to 1949, Mr. Camp was an accountant and office manager for a Richmond trucking firm, Carter Brothers Inc. and an accountant and partner with the Richmond firm of Leach, Calkins, and Scott. He was a former director of the Richmond chapter of the National Association of Accountants and a member of the Financial Executive Institute.
Mr. Camp was a former president of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, the West Point Kiwanis Club, and the West Point Country Club. He also served as a board member of Ferrum College, the University of Maine Pulp and Paper Foundation, and the Pulp and Paper Foundation at NC State. He was a director of St Paul’s College and Rappahannock Community College.
