Jan Futrell and Tim Sullivan
Jan Futrell (Business Management ’81) and Tim Sullivan are graduates of North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina, respectively. The Phillip G. Berry Memorial Scholarship in the Poole College of Management is established in memory of their nephew, Phillip G. Berry (October 30, 1994 – November 29, 2021). Phillip was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. During his adolescent years, Phillip developed a passion for the outdoors; he loved fishing, hunting, snowboarding and playing football. He spent many summers at Pirate’s Cove in Manteo, North Carolina, where he became an avid life-long fisherman and where his love for the outdoors flourished. Phillip was a graduate of the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce with a degree in environmental science and real estate. After graduating from UVA, Phillip moved to Nashville, Tennessee. There he also discovered a passion for powerlifting and strongman training. He excelled at everything he set his mind to and soon was participating in competitions around the country. Phillip was set to begin his MBA at Belmont University in January 2022 with plans to further pursue his interest in real estate development. Phillip’s zest for life, thoughtfulness and outgoing personality drew people to him. He never met a stranger and made everyone he encountered feel like they were a close friend. He truly lived every day to the fullest. He had a large, diverse circle of true friends and family whose lives he positively impacted and who will always remember and miss him. Although his life was cut too short, Phillip’s example of how to embrace life made a lasting impact on those who knew him. Phillip would always seek to help those around him. Jan and Tim believe that establishing the Phillip G. Berry Memorial Scholarship honors Phillip in a way he would appreciate. They recognize the importance of scholarships that can help reduce the financial burden of attending college for students who are pursuing their dreams.
