John William Horn
In grateful recognition for the support, mentorship and our successful working relationship, we established this endowed scholarship in Professor Horn’s honor and memory. The legacy of Professor Horn’s leadership in my life and career will now live on at NC State, in addition to living on through Kimley-Horn and Associates. Born and raised in Halifax County, VA, I credit Professor Horn with “getting me through and getting me out” of NC State. Following graduation in 1969, I returned home to South Boston and worked for some years as the Director of Public Works, later established McDannald Construction, an industrial and commercial construction company. What began as a mentor-student relationship between Professor Horn and myself evolved into a friendship and eventually a business partnership when I hired the company Professor Horn co-founded (Kimley-Horn, an engineering, planning, design and consulting firm) to work in South Boston, VA. The two worked together successfully and the city of South Boston, VA has the Kimley-Horn-McDannald “stamp” on a main traffic artery. Though Professor Horn passed away in 2000, his impact on me is still felt to this day.
