Mr. Larry B. Lovvorn

Dr. Lovvorn was a graduate of Auburn University, the University of Missouri, and the University of Wisconsin. He became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Agronomy in 1936 and remained there in various positions, including Department Head, until 1950. He was Director of the Division of Weed Investigations with the USDA in Beltsville, MD until 1953, when he returned to NC State as Director of Instruction in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. In 1955, he became Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station, where he remained until 1969. He was named Administrator of the Cooperative Research Service, USDA, Washington, DC where he served until retiring in 1976. He was named Tar Heel of the Week in the News and Observer, Man of the Year in Service to NC Agriculture from the Progressive Farmer, and an International Gamma Sigma Delta award winner for Distinguished Service to Agriculture. His wife, Virginia Brown Lovvorn, was an honors graduate of Drury University and accompanied and supported him through his many endeavors.
