Mr. & Mrs. Charles Randy Wicker
This scholarship is intended for capable students from a background experience similar to Randy Wicker. His
admission was facilitated by an Erwin, NC banker who knew of him as a talented football player and math
student. They met in the summer after graduation and he asked Randy what his plans were. Randy was
considering enlisting in the Air Force. The banker thought he should consider an opportunity to play football
for NC State. He offered to take him to Raleigh to speak with Coach Edwards! Randy believed he was too
small to receive a scholarship but jumped at the opportunity and was awarded a 1 year grant to play football
and enter the School of Engineering.
The ’64-65 academic year was very difficult for Randy and he learned he was not able to continue with
football and be a student. He located employment on the night shift at Dix Hill which supported his education
to a BSEE, ranking 90th out of 1203 students. Randy graduated without student debt and few social
experiences that would have served him well as an adult. This scholarship will insure a more rounded
personal development as it is renewable annually when eligibility is maintained.
It is anticipated that a high school Guidance Counselor is able to locate and assist a talented student from a
limited background in Harnett County NC, to the opportunity to graduate from the NCSU School of
Engineering.
