Mrs. Betty and Mr. George McKim, Mrs. Gina and Mr. Herb McKim, and Ms. Mary Beth M. Corbin
Herbert P. McKim graduated from NC State School of Design as a member of its first graduating class in 1950. Since then Mr. McKim has been very involved representing the design community and underrepresented populations at multiple levels within the College, University and State. He has been recognized for his distinguished career and extraordinary accomplishments as an architect as the 2001 recipient of the North Carolina AIA F. Carter Williams Gold Medal. This scholarship stands as a testament to Mr McKims dedication to the profession of architecture and the education of architecture students.
Impact
Herbert P. Mckim has remained close to the College ever since graduating in 1950. He supports the Design Foundation as a board member, a scholarship campaign committee member, the chair of a search committee to hire a new dean, mentors graduates, Design Guild member, member of the 2000 architecture accreditation committee, and a advisor to the College. He supports North Carolina State University as a member of Phi Kappa Phi, an elected alumnus representative of the Athletic Council, New Hanover Wolfpack Club Chairman for thirty years, and an Alumni Association member. He has supported the State of North Carolina as a member and president of the North Carolina Board of Architecture, representing North Carolina on the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, and serving as a member and president of several Architectural accreditation visiting teams. He also served as a board member and president of AIA North Carolina where he was concerned with the diversity of members in the organization and profession. The McKims also have been concerned over the underrepresented population in North Carolina. Mr. McKim served as co-chairman of the Wilmington Bi-Racial Committee and on the North Carolina Good Neighbor Council during the unrest in the state in the 1960’s.
