The Broughton High School Class of 1950 established this scholarship in 2006 in memory of their friend and fellow classmate, Pete Jenkins. During his years at Broughton, Mr. Jenkins participated in several student activities including Student Council, Hi-Y, Spanish Club, Football and Track. After graduating from Broughton, Mr. Jenkins joined the Marine Corps and served in the Korean Conflict. Upon his return home, Mr. Jenkins enrolled at NC State and received a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering. He worked in the Furniture manufacturing business until 1965 when he began his career in local government. Mr. Jenkins was on of the first professional county managers in the state. He worked with several government officials, including Governor Jim Hunt, to rewrite and develop local government administrative budget and finance laws. He continued his work both domestically and internationally by consulting and training people in the area of local government administration. Through his many years of dedicated service to the improvement of local governments, Mr. Jenkins earned the Special Service Award and Life Membership in the North Carolina Association of City/County Management and an Outstanding County Finance Officer award from the NC Association of County Finance Officers. He was also awarded a Life Membership in the International City/County Management Association.
