Mrs. Kathe Alhusen Henke
Hanns-Dieter Alhusen was an immigrant from Germany, and came to the United States as a young man who exemplified the American dream. Through hard work and imaginative approaches, he made enormous contributions to the swine industry. He sought to improve methods of swine production in many areas including all-in all-out farrowing, nurseries, and finishing; passive solar ventilation; alternative waste handling; addition of fat to lactation diets; enriched and fortified diets for weaned pigs; and the introduction of new lean-type genotypes. He worked closely with students and trainees and he encouraged them to visit his production units as interns or trainees. He allowed graduate research to be conducted in his facilities.
