John “Jack” Evans Rice earned his degree in architecture from the School of Design in 1971. The year after, he moved to California with his family where he received his Masters in Design at the University of California, Los Angelas. Jack established his firm, JERA Inc., in Raleigh in 1978. He also served on and chaired the Raleigh planning commission in the 1980s. Jack was recognized for his designs of apartments and affordable housing. He also helped in creating ADA-compliant facilities at a number of North Carolina public buildings.
