Mrs.Oma Holt Taylor
Mrs.Oma Holt Taylor donated Taylor Forest, a 118 acre tract of land in Nash County, NC to the NC State Natural Resources Foundation in 2007. Taylor Forest is managed by the College of Natural Resources Forest Assets group and income from the forest so generously donated by Mrs. Taylor funds the Taylor/Holt Forest and Wildlife Management Scholarships
Mrs. Taylor was born in Harnett County and spent most of her life in Wake County. Her early years were on her family’s farm in Holly Springs with her ten siblings. As a young adult she moved to Raleigh where she met her future husband, Julian Carter Taylor, Jr. (Carter). They were married for thirty-three years before his death on July 5, 1977.
Mrs. Taylor enjoyed traveling with her husband to destinations in the US and abroad. She provided opportunities for her nieces and nephews to enjoy numerous educational and cultural opportunities. She was a talented cook who enjoyed preparing meals at home for family and guests.
Mrs. Taylor worked as a manger, bookkeeper and typist at the FCX in Downtown Raleigh and later at Jesse Jones Sausage in Garner. In High School she was a guard on the Holly Springs High School women’s basketball team which were sponsored by her employers.
She volunteered for many years with the American Red Cross and Meals on Wheels and was recognized by Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. for her years of service as a Red Cross volunteer. Her neighbors loved “Granny Taylor” and she enjoyed spoiling them with homemade cookies and orange soda.
Mrs. Taylor passed away on October 22, 2012 at the age of 99. She was survived by two sisters, a brother, many nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Buddy.
