Ms. Candace Goode Vick, Mr. Charles L. Goode

Lemuel “Lem” Goode was born in Saulsville, West Virginia, and was reared on a livestock farm. He received his BS degree in Agricultural Education from West Virginia University. He then served in the army in the Pacific during WWII. He received the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism under fire in the Philippines. He received his MS degree in Animal Husbandry from West Virginia and then was employed with the NC Extension Service as a County Agent in Cherokee County for two years. During that time he met his wife Lucy. In 1947, he accepted a position at NCSU and remained at NCSU until his retirement in 1986. He took a study leave in 1958 and completed his PhD in Animal Science from the University of Florida in 1961. Dr. Goode was best known for his role in developing the Polled (without horns) Dorset breed of sheep. Today, almost all of the Dorset sheep in the US are polled, and trace back to Dr. Goode’s flock. He was an outstanding teacher and involved with the Livestock Judging Team. He taught beef, sheep, and swine production, as well as, a large portion of the Intro to Animal Science class. He was recognized twice as an outstanding teacher at NCSU. Lucy Winston Goode was born in Franklin County, NC. She received her degree in Physical Education from ECU. She taught history and coached basketball at Murphy High School for two years. She enjoyed interacting with Dr. Lem’s students and was an integral part of the College Sunday School program at Forest Hills Baptist Church for more than 40 years.
