Mr. Robert Lee (Bob) Mashburn, Jr., was the beloved golf course superintendent at Hope Valley Country Club in Durham, NC. Mr. Mashburn was born in Pinehurst, NC and was educated in the Pinehurst schools. While growing up, he developed a passion for golf courses, and became a third generation superintendent, following in his late father’s and grandfather’s footsteps. He spent 17 years at Quail Hollow Country Club in Charlotte and had just celebrated his 18th year as superintendent at Hope Valley Country Club when he died. He was a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. He was a gregarious and outgoing superintendent who was loved and appreciated by all the golfing community. Recipients of the Bob Mashburn Scholarship will be provided the opportunity to serve as an intern at the Hope Valley Country Club during at least one summer of their tenure as the recipient.
