Ms. Marina Barthalmus
George and Marina T. Barthalmus, along with friends, colleagues, and former students established this scholarship on Dr. Barthalmus’ retirement from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at NC State University. Dr. Barthalmus, a 1965 baccalaureate alumnus of Bloomsburg University, PA, received a M.S. and Ph.D. in Zoology from Pennsylvania State University. In 1970, he joined the Zoology faculty at NC State as an assistant professor. He served many roles at NC State, including Undergraduate Coordinator for Zoology and Associate Dean and Director of Academic Programs. During his career at NC State, he demonstrated unparalleled commitment to the College’s students and a staunch advocacy of dynamic academic programs, strengthened advising, and increased scholarship support and enhanced experiential learning opportunities for undergraduates. Among many of his accolades, he was named to the Academy of Outstanding Teachers three separate years, and in 1993 was named an Alumni Distinguished Professor. He held a US patent for a method of inhibiting the growth of melanin-pigmented cells and authored or co-authored dozens of articles in journals. Dr. Barthalmus died unexpectedly in May 2011.
