Squires Timber Company

The T. Nelson Squires Scholarship Endowment was established in 1998 by Squires Timber Company. The endowment was established to provide scholarships to undergraduate students majoring in Forestry Management.

Mr. Squires was born in Kelly, NC on November 27, 1924, the son of the late Glennie and Janie Kelly Squires. He served as a Corporal in the United States Army, Company L in the 109th Infantry, 28th Division. He received two Bronze Service Stars, a WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

After leaving the Army, Mr. Squires followed in the footsteps of his father, Glennie Squires, and his grandfather, Andrew Jackson Squires, by joining the timber business. Since 1976, Nelson Squires was the owner and President of Squires Timber Company.

Mr. Squires was on the Board of Directors of APA (now known as Forest Resources Association, Inc.) from 1980-1998 as an active member. He was an honorary member from 1998 until the time of his death in 2008. He had over a 70-year career in the forest industry as a landowner and steward of forests. He pioneered reforestation and was a leader in land management. He worked with the Nature Conservancy in preserving the 2000-year-old cypress trees along the Black River.

In 2004, Mr. Squires was honored by the Bladen County Committee of One Hundred with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his entrepreneurial spirit and for being a major contributor to business and community. Squires Timber Company was also recognized as one of the top 100 businesses in the state.
