Steve Schuster and Mary Anne Howard
Steven Schuster, a 1973 graduate of the College of Design, is a funding principal of Clearscapes, a practice role model because of its partnership between artist and architect based on the belief that architecture should be a functional work of art that serves to engage and inspire its users and their community. Clearscapes under his leadership has received more than seventy-five design awards at the local, state and national levels and has completed more than 100 public and private art installations throughout the United States.
Steve’s career spans the design of single family residences to major public facilities with emphasis on museums, libraries, visual arts centers and performing arts theaters. As a national leader in the historic preservation community, Steve has led the e o in revitalizing countless historic structures, developing vital contemporary uses for them within their communities. Notable projects include Marbles Kids Museum, the Haw River Ballroom, the Raleigh Convention Center, the Hudson, Raleigh’s new Contemporary Art Museum, and the design for Union station in Downtown Raleigh’s warehouse district.
Steve has provided vital leadership to the American Institute of Architects, the National Trust of Historic Preservation, Preservation North Carolina, and Raleigh Historic Properties Commission. A.IA NC named Clearscapes Firm of the Year in 2007 and Steve received the F. Carter Williams Gold Medal in 2012. He was named a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects in 2011.
At NC State, Steve serves on the NC State University Board of Visitors, the College of Design Leaders Council and was the 2013 Urban Design Conference Chair. He has been a professor of practice and a visiting lecturer at the college, has served on numerous design juries, and served as the Chair of the Student Publication Endowment Campaign. Most recently Steve was selected as the 2012 College of Design Distinguished Alumnus.
