Terry and Anne Phillips

Growing up in Raleigh made it easy to connect to North Carolina State. Reynolds Coliseum opened in 1949, and my Daddy started taking me to basketball games. I have been a Wolfpack fan for about 70 years.

At Needham Broughton High School, I had good success in the sciences, especially math, chemistry, and physics. I was fortunate enough to receive a partial scholarship to North Carolina State during my senior year in high school. A career in Engineering seemed to be a good fit. I enrolled in the Nuclear Engineering Department at State and received a BS and an MS Degree in Nuclear Engineering. Neither of my parents had had the opportunity to finish high school. I felt very fortunate.

Upon completion of graduate school, I went to work for Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, part of the General Electric Company, in upstate New York. My initial job was training the U.S. Navy enlisted and officers how to operate a nuclear power plant. My education from North Carolina State enabled me to have a successful thirty year career with the GE Company.

My wife and I are glad we can help others with the opportunity to receive a college education from a great university like North Carolina State University. It is our hope that recipients of this scholarship will be successful in their careers, and perhaps will be able to help others in a similar fashion in the future.
