William M. Bailey

The William M. Bailey Endowed Scholarship was established in 1992 by Dr. Mack W. Bailey in memory of his late father. The endowment was established to provide scholarships for Paper Science and Engineering undergraduate students.

Bill Bailey was born in Richmond, Virginia on August 11, 1915. He attended NC State University, where he was the Student Body President and Cadet Colonel of the ROTC. He was also Co-Captain of the Swim Team and a member of Alpha Zeta, Blue Key, the Athletic Council, and numerous other campus clubs. Bill also played football his freshman and sophomore years, and was Freshman Class President. He received a BS in Forestry.

Upon graduation, Bill’s initial job was in Andrews, South Carolina. He served in the Corps of Engineers during World War II as a Captain responsible for a sawmill operation in Guadalcanal. After returning from the service, he joined International Paper Company where he worked for fifteen years. He left International Paper as Regional Manager of Woodlands Division.

Bill spent a year running a filling station in Orlando, Florida before joining Southwest Forest Industries in Flagstaff, Arizona, where he was in charge of wood procurement. After a few years, he returned to the southeast with Allied Paper Corporation in Jackson, Alabama. Bill retired from Allied as Vice President in charge of wood procurement and settled in Perdido Beach, Alabama. Bill passed away on July 30, 1986.
